Project: Digitizing a legacy tape archive and designing a bespoke media management system for Manchester United’s television channel

Challenge: Improve access to, and delivery of, MUTV’s archive content and create a platform that will enhance productivity and performance on a technical level.

Solution: With 2,500 tapes in the archive – including Premier League, Champions League, reserve and youth team matches plus training sessions - a workflow evaluation was required to ascertain the best technology solution.

Once complete it was decided that tapes would be ingested to IMX 30 and QuickTime and stored within a bespoke digital archive, designed by WRN Broadcast. LTO4 data tapes were used for deep archive storage and disaster recovery purposes.

WRN Broadcast then deployed an asset management system that created low-resolution proxy file, allowing MUTV staff to browse, access and edit archive and library footage from their desktops.

The new turnkey set-up improves staff access to content and, in turn, results in channel subscribers benefitting from additional services. Productivity and quality are also improved while the reduction in tape handling makes MUTV more efficient.

MUTV Managing Director Sameer Pabari said: "WRN's expert consultancy and insight into digital workflows has enabled MUTV to integrate a technology solution that increases our efficiency and most importantly, improves the quality of services we deliver to our subscribers.”
